Disable Menu Bars and the Start Button (Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP)
This tweak can be used to disable the menu bar in standard Windows applications and the Start Button.

Open your registry and find the key below.
Rename the key by placing a dash "-" in front of the GUID (i.e. {-5b4dae26-b807-11d0-9815-00c04fd91972}).

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Note: This tweak may cause a problem with the taskbar appearance when Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater is installed. If you experience a problem please reverse the tweak to restore the original setting.

The tweak disabled the Start Button but caused an Explorer error message that would not close.

Thank you for the rejected response to your answer... next time you reject someone, please give a reason as to why this did not work or you did not choose it so the next person can "assist" you. No more replies from me to your problems.

This is a great little utility that has enabled me to hide/disable the Start Button in Win98. Extremely simple but effective. To jschein@mailcity.com, thank you very much for the resolution and my apology to you as well for a poor reason given for first answer rejection and why it did not work. I will be more courteous and forthcoming in the future. Thanks again for the help and for being here. Steve Z

The machine I wanted to disable the start button on kept displaying an Explorer error message window stating that a fault had been caused and would be shut down. The window would not cancel until I undid the registry tweak. However, I tried it on another Win98 pc and it works perfectly. I should not have rejected the first answer without trying it on a second machine. The tweak does in fact work well. Thanks for the resolution!
