Disable User Accounts in XP Pro

By angie.richmond ·
We use Novell network on our machines at work and students enter a name and password to log on to the network. This summer we are moving over to Windows XP Professional. How do we disable user accounts on XP so that students don't have to log in twice and we don't have to create loads of user accounts on each machine?
Thanks.

Angie

In brief - use a Novell Client for Windows on the XP Workstation machines. This will make Windows XP Pro "aware" that it is operating as part of a Novell network and will make Netware services (servers, printers and security info etc) available to Win XP.

Providing you aren't running a Client for Microsoft Networks on the Workstation machines at the same time as the Novell Client, then the user account information will only be requested once.

The latest version of the Novell Client forWindows can be downloaded from: download.novell.com

In practice its more complex than that - you don't say which version of Netware you are using. If it isn't an up-to-date one then you may still be using IPX protocol rather than TCP/IP in which case this will need to be taken into account when you implement XP as either you will need to load TCP/IP protocol onto your Netware servers or you will need to load IPX protocol onto your XP Workstations.

No matter what you do, XP is an NT based OS and requires a local logon in order to access the machine on any level. Otherwise it has no idea what level of security to provide the user.

As far as I know you are stuck having to create local accounts for each student...if you have an NT or AD domain this can be skipped since they will logon to the domain and the PC will trust the domain logon as long as its a member of the domain.

As answer 2 stated a NT or AD domain negates the need to create user accounts on the PC but within the Client for Novell properties you can set the login box not to display a name and keep "Save Profile" unticked. There are other configuration items for the login box there as well. So have a look and play about with it.

We use Intranetware 4.11. We need a way that would syncronize Windows Xp with Novell XP Client or disable the profile function within Xp. We have multi users per machine; is it possible to create a 'guest' account that would accept multi-user logins in XP?
