Disabling Keyboard Power Key

By blondiefox ·
How do I disable a keyboard power key so that users do not accidentally hit it and turn their PC off. The keyboard model is: KB-858.
Thank you.

power key

I have the same problem. You might try disabeling power management in the cmos. I can't get the sleep and wake keys to work either in windows2000 pro. They work fine if I boot into 98. go figure.

Try this

by hyaman2001 In reply to Disabling Keyboard Power ...

in registry go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
and create a new BINARY value called "Scancode Map", ten fill in the
following values:

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
02 00 00 00 00 00 5E E0
00 00 00 00

this should map keyboard power button to a null key, thus disabling it.
I didn't have a chance to test it, sice I don't have a power button on
my keyboard, but i'm using the same method for disabling annoying menu
keys on my keyboard.
Dont forgot to reboot the system after this change

Don't try that!!

by carbonfibah In reply to Try this

Don't try what hyaman2001 suggests. That scancode maps ALL of your keyboard keys to null, and somehow stops the mouse working too. Good luck trying to fix that one.

I didn't think that was very funny, I'll be a lot more careful following suggestions on the net in future. And I think i might avoid this site too.

You're wrong & misleading...

by CoolG In reply to Don't try that!!

The code as suggested above is perfectly correct and will cause NO keyboard lock down.
If that happened to you then it's for a different reason altogether. Something that YOU did wrong...
