This is too wierd.

when I read the issue, I immediately thought of Black Viper..

Wow, great minds do think alike..

I prefer to use this handy tool for managing services.

Hi computab,

I use the built-in service manager to start/stop and manage services. Why would I want to use a thrid party software when I have the requisite tools built-in? :-)

Go to Start|Run and type services.msc in the space. Click Ok. The MMC console will display all serices installed and provide you the status of each. If you have the extended view enable (see the Tab at the bottom), then you will also get a brief description of each service.

Double-click the service you want to disable (or configure for a manual start) and complete the necessary action.

N.B. Remember to check the dependencies before you change the startup type.

Good Luck.
