Disabling Sounds Card Using Regedit for WinXP

By ryan_g_lynn ·
Any information on doing this would be greatly appreciated because Im pulling my hair out with this one.

Im trying to find a way to Disable Sound Cards on Win XP machines using Regedit. Im trying to do this on a network wide scale so I need to use the regedit function of XP.

Also is there an option to disable Windows Media player using this same method?

Not So Simple

My first thought was that you could go in and set the key for the sound device to the off state and do not install. However, that key will be different for EVERY different sound card or integrated sound device.

Your first step is to determine how many different sound devices there are. Then experiment with a test system to verify that putting in place all of the keys to disable all sound devices does not mess things up.

Keep in mind, that this is not a fool-proof method. If the users have administrative rights, they could go in and enable the sound device from device manager.

Group Policy would likely be a better way to accomplish what you are attempting.

Media player has similar issues as the registry key may be slightly different for different versions.
