disappearing CD-Rom drive

By f-1742104 ·
In the non-profit organisation for which I voluntarily work we prepare donated portable PC to be distributed to handicapped persons. We use Ghost to reinstall the needed programs and OS on those portables. On some of them, though the Ghost restore works OK (which means the CD-Rom works), after rebooting to Win 98 the CD-Rom disappears and is not accessible !!! Reinstalling Win 98 cures the problem !!! but we loose a great part of Ghosting. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

disappearing CD-Rom drive

Instead of re-installing Windows, try installing the correct IDE buss driver for the motherboard on the system.

A simple trick that works some of the time, is to remove all 3 IDE controllers from device manager:
Primary
Secondary
Root

Whenyou re-boot, Windows should find the IDE controllers, and install the correct drivers.

The problem is that your Ghost Image has the drivers for the motherboard configuration of the PC that was used to create the image from.

Even if the PCs arebasically the same, different revisions of the IDE controller, or the system BIOS can cause Windows to not be able to see the CD drive.

After you do what Chas says then make a new image of the Pc when it works, and use that one for future. Make seperate images for each system you plan to ghost. We have about 20 different ones.
