Disappearing Desktop Icons in NT 4.0

By falcoc ·
We are having a problem with desktop icons disappearing when installing new PC's. We are using NT4 with SP6a. The icons are always present when using the administrator login, but disappear when users log in, and can't be restored via any of the usual methods such as Display Properties, etc. HELP!

Disappearing Desktop Icons in NT 4.0

Hi!, you can try two things:
first: if you are using policies with the user or machines check what they are.
second: inside the winnt folder there is another folder called profiles, inside this must be one for each user that has been logged in themachine, and other two folders that ar "all users" and "default user", then what you can do is the next: enter inside the Administrator profile, select all, make copy, and then paste this inside the profile you want, or inside the "all users" profiles.
Hope it?s helps you

Sounds like user profiles. Copy the Icons into the all users folder under winnt\profiles.

You would have to set up the user's profiles. If you go to start. - settings. - taskbar. - start menu programs. - advanced. - Now, click WINNT. - Profiles. (select user) - Start Menu. You can adjust each users start menu here. Once this is complete. Log on as the user, and set up there desktop. All you need to do is drag a short cut for each desired program, and drop it on the desktop. One this task is created, it will remain this way every time the selected user signs on. This allows each user to have their own customized desktop.... (wallpaper, shortcuts, toolbar position) Hope this helps. If you need it broken down at all feel free to e-mail.

My guess would be policy. It might be a custom desktop with no icons in the directory or no directory at all. You can find it in Default User\Windows NT Shell\Custom folders. See if it's checked and if it is, look at the path to the folder. Or "hideall items on desktop" may be checked. Thats in Default User\Shell\Restrictions

Hi,

just rember how Windows works with Profiles.
First their are mad to have each user's personal settings, complete different from other user's of this Machine.
When you install a "new Machine" the following happens:
Windows looks first if a Profile for the User exist (under %winbootdir%\Profiles\%USERNAME%
If their is nothing, then ist looks under the default User, and copys the settings to the created userprofile folder. Then it looks under All Users and takes from their the global settings for the Profile.
My hint:
Create a Sample User
Logon as the Sample User
Make all your changes
Log off
Log on as the Administrator of the Machine (or what ever)
under Controls start the System Tool, and click on the Profiles Tab. Chose the path %Winbootdir%\Profiles\sampleuser.
Now copy it to DEFAULT USER, and don't forget to change the Permission from "sampleuser" to everyone.

Now everyone who logs on the first time on this machine, he gets the default User Profile.hope it helps

If you have an corrupt Profile, so it is not enaugh to delete the Folder for his Profile.
You have to delete the files in the Profiles Folder and the Pointer in the Registry. HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfilesList.
The Funything is that you don't see their the Name of the user, what you see is the SID+UID. Dont panik and look with regedt32 in each key, their you?have the Profile Path with the Username.

Ok !

Happy workings
