disappearing drives

my cd rom drives on my win2000 machine have suddenly disappeared? they cannot be seen in windows explorer or the my computer list, and i no longer am able to access the drives on start-up or to write to..do i need to repair or re-install win2k

Windows won't display a CD-Rom if the computer doesn't think that the CD-ROM is attached to it. Odds are that it's a hardware issue and not a Windows problem. You might try checking to be sure that the cables are tight or try replacing the drive.

thanks for the tip..i tried this and disconnected both drives and started again..but to no avail! i recently installed some cd copying software..now deleted cos it was shareware..might this affect them?

Do the CD drives show up on the POST screen while the PC is booting?
If not, enter BIOS setup, and verify that the IDE channels are set correctly for the drives.

Un-installing the software might have corrupted your IDE driver.

There are 2 ways to repair the IDE driver.

Simple method:
Open device manager.
Select and remove ALL 3 IDE controllers
Primary
Secondary
Root hub

Close device manager, and re-boot

With any luck, your CD drives should be back.

Second:
Download and install the latest chip-set drivers for your motherboard.
If this is a name brand system, you should be able to download the drivers from the mfg.
If not, start with the motherboard manufactures support page.

thanks to all for the posts..turned out it was the uninstalling of easy cd creator that caused the problem..needed to change the settings in the registry etc..thanks again!
