Disappearing Files On USB Drive

By will ·
I have a Maxtor OneTouch III (1000MB)
Until yesterday the drive was used to house a few images and such. Now the drive shows all the directories but no files. It says in the drive details that the drive is using nearly half of the space on the drive (446GB) but when I explore the drive there are no files displayed.

Does anyone know where these files have gone? Any idea how to get them back?
I thought perhaps it was a file table issue but then the directories wouldn't display.

Going to perform a recovery now to see if it can find anything. Or are my files gone

Before you mess with the Drive

by OH Smeg In reply to Disappearing Files On USB ...

It may pay to use the Makers Testing Utility to confirm that the Drive is in Fact working correctly. Seagate provide Seatools for this

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/

Test the HDD first before proceeding any further.

Try a Linux boot

by w2ktechman In reply to Won't see drive anymore

and plug in the drive to the USB, see if your data is accessible then.
Often when Windows will not see the disk/data properly Linux will. However, sometimes XP and linux wont and Vista will.

it's good to have multiple options I guess

And if a Live Linux will not work

by OH Smeg In reply to Try a Linux boot

And you do not want to dismantle the Drive call Seagate and organize to have it returned for Guarantee Repair/Replacement.

The problem here is that this is used all the time and as a result it runs much hotter that the HDD is comfortable with and this shortens the life of the Electronic Components considerably.

I think that is the problem. I am going to call seagate today and see if they will replace the drive.
