disappearing icons

By admin ·
I have 1 room of 25 win98 PCs in which specific icons pointing to network apps keep vanishing from the screen. They do this simultaneously from time to time. We put them back by copy and pasting shortcuts, but a few days later it happens again. What causes this and/or how do I put an end to this?

Check for virus/trojans and stuff like that. Apart from having all antiviral sources updated, use an antiadware/bug like killAd or Spybot.

Another cause could be that if you all have the same graphics card with it's Desktop manager software loaded, sometimes theese don't work all that well and "fight" Windows' desktop configuration. In my case, Matrox's Quickdesk sometimes missconfigured the icon arrangement in my desktop.
Allways use the latest drivers available to stop this problem.

First, open scanreg.ini and change the 1 to 0 on this line Registry backup is skipped altogether if this is set to 0 Backup=0
Save your settings and close it.
Second, open msconfig and uncheck Scan Registry in startup. Restart the computer. That should do it.
