Disappearing icons in systray.

By severini ·
I am having an issue in NT4.0 where the icons in the system tray disappear after I log off and then back on. If I reboot the computer or restart, I don't have the issue. It only happens when logging off. I tried reinstalling the service pack(SP5), but am still having the same problem. I have not been able to find anything on Technet regarding perhaps a corrupt systray.exe. If anyone has experienced this same problem, I would love to hear from you. Thanks.

I had this problem once before, but it was due to a corrupt installation of the Novell Client. After I reloaded Novell, I was fine!

Have you checked your event log? I've seen this happen when there is a problem with the Explorer shell. If the shell is not shutting down and/or restarting properly when you log off and back on, this could cause the problem. Another approach would be to try uninstalling, one by one, the items that are running in your systray to see if some extension running there is causing the problem - assuming of course that you have things running in systray other than the defaults. Hope this helps!

There is a registry value, which could make the problem. If on the following location in the registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.

Is there this value
EnforceShellExtensionSecurity - A value of 1 causes Windows NT to only load the shell extensions listed in the Approved subkey (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved).

In the approved keys there is a
NoSaveSettings - A value of 1 prevent changes to the positions of icons and open windows, and the size and position of the taskbar from being saved after logoff.

If you restart you will get your profile.

Good luck.
