Disappearing Printers

By scott ·
I have a Win 98 2nd Addition PC that the printers will disappear from the printers folder. If I re-boot the PC, they will re-appear. There is no consistantancy with this occurance, it is just random. I have re-installed Windows, re-installed the port drivers and switched out printer cables. Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

Go in printer setup, go in spooler setting and change it to print directly on printer!
I had the same problem and this worked for me!

I was unable to change spooler settings, this is a Laser printer, and the settings were grayed out.

We have had similiar problems with printers disappearing. We determined one problem was a particular software package when printing if you hit the print button instead of going thru the menu to print sometimes the printers would be gone.
Anothercause was if we got Spool32 errors. Sometimes it didn't actually display but had the same result of no printers. It has to do with how it loads the spooler. One thing you might try is to make a shortcut to spool32.exe in your startup folder.

That has worked out great for us!
Hope this helps!

I have also seen this problem but on NT 4.0 networked desktops where the would issue a print error ( for a network printer) and on the print server the printers were gone from the printers folder. Stopping and restarting the spooler would make them reappear and work properly. So look to the spooler for the answer to the problem.

I have to go with the others here: We used to use Extra! from Attachmate, which gave us frequent exceptions error while printing, and thereby making the printers disappear from the folders.

You could install the "Runas"-utility (resource kit)to stop/restart the printer spooler as administrator (since normal users will not be allowed to do this - if they can, hire someone else to set up your workstations). Good luck.

Go into the BIOS on the machine and check your LPT port settings. Be sure that type is set to ECP. If it is set to anything else, alot of printers (especially newer ones) will have trouble communicating.

Already set to ECP. Thanks for trying.
