Disappearing printers

By Iphicles ·
I have a NT 4.0 workstation running SP4. It's a Pentium 200 MMX with 64 MB RAM. Starting about a week ago, the printers (all networked) would disappear from her Printers Folder. I checked her connection to the print server, and it's fine. She canaccess the file server, and app. server (all different servers). Plus, all other users can print to the same network printers. I have to restart her machine to "refresh" the printers. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Had the same problem once. The printers just disappeared. Checked the event logs & found references to the RPC service not running. Started RPC service & the printers came back.

I noted that as well, however, it keeps happening over and over again. I also noticed that the spooler service is taking up a lot of resources, too. When I start and stop the spooler service, things are up and running again. Any reason why this keeps coming up?

I have seen that issue before. My resolution was simply reinstalling the service pack. I would suggest, however that you go with SP5 or SP6. Other suggestions include uninstalling the current service pack then installing a new one (if when you installed SP4 you opted to allow an uninstall).

The Windows NT print processor may be set to NT EMF 1.003.
Configure the printer to use the RAW Datatype by clicking Start / Settings / Printers and right-click the printer, and click Properties. On the General tab, click Print Processor.

If clients can not see a network printer, use Start / Settings / Printers on the Print Server to open the printers Properties. Then click OK.
If you receive:

Printer setting could not Be saved. Data area passed to a system call is too small.
122L Error_insufficiant_Buffer

the printer share has become corrupted.

To fix the problem:

. Open the printers' Properties and click Not Shared on the Sharing tab (don't forget to remember the share name).

. Click OK and close the Printers folder.

. Use Control Panel / Services / Spooler to Stop the Spooler.

. Use Regedt32 to verfiy that:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares\<ShareName>\Security and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares\<ShareName> are not present.

If they are, delete them.

. Use Control Panel / Services / Spooler to Start the Spooler.

. Use Start / Settings / Printers to re-create the printer's share.
