Disappering Profiles

By aubrey.sanders ·
I have a customer her using Windows NT 4.0 on a PIII 650 with 256MB of memory. She said she got some kind of memory error and now when she logs on she has a blank screen with no icons and the start menu only has Programs, Documents, and help (which doesn't help at all). The funny thing is when anybody else logs in with there own profile they get everything with no problems. This is one I have never came accross before any help will be great.

Disappering Profiles

Is it a roaming profile or a local one? If it's a roaming profile I would start by deleting the profile on the server and the copy on the local machine, then copying a known good profile and see what happens. But before you do that (if it's roaming)have her login to another machine and see what happens. This way you can determine whether it's the profile or the computer itself making the problem.

Ensure that she don't have a policy editor set on that user.

If her profile is not highly customized, you could take a shortcut and just delete her profile (local and/or roaming if both exist) and copy another known good profile to her roaming or local profile folder. Another approach would be to have her log on to another machine. If she gets her normal desktop, then you know that the local profile on her original WS is corrupted, but the roaming profile is OK. Then, you can simply delete the local profile, have her log back in on her WS and the roaming profile will be copied back to the local workstation. If the roaming profile is also corrupted (or if there is no roaming profile), then just delete the local profile, have her log back in (which will create a new profile for her from the default local profile), and then you can add any further customizations or settings that she needs from there. Hope this helps!
