disconnecting from network

By MKendall ·
What causes Windows 2000 Pro to disconnect and reconnect? I have gradually been trying to upgrade from Winnt 4 to Windows 2000 Pro and every system that is now Windows 2000 disconnects and reconnects. The funny thing is, even though they have a big fat red X on their mapping you can still access the drive and the X goes a way for a while. Everything I have read says put Service Pack 3 on. I have done that and it doesn't help this issue one bit.

The other thought I had was a time sync issue, I still have Winnt 4 for my PDC and BDC. What problems can this cause?

Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

both windows 2000 and windows XP disconnect unused drives after a period of time. reinitiating a connection renables the connection. pretty much a "sleep" mode for your network drive connections.
It isnt a problem, its working as designed

check Q297684 on technet for more info

How come it slows performance down?

This is the "auto-disconnect" feature in Windows 2000. Since they are server/network oriented OS, Windows NT and Windows 2000 can drop idle connections after a specified time-out period, which by default is 15 minutes, so that server resources are not wasted on unused sessions. It may be slower when it reconnects, but the idea is to maximize bandwidth on large networks.

These articles explain it and offer instructions about altering or eliminating it:

It may be working as designed but it is causing me issues. For example, user in Cadkey is accessing files from the network and boom right in the middle of a translation he loses his network connection. I have a user in our database accessing filesand boom he loses connection while accessing. I could understand the sleep mode thing because Win 2000 is trying to free up rescources, but when it come to accessing files and it goes into autodisconnecting that causes issues.

I guess I might need to reword my question.

What causes the autodisconnect to turn off while accessing the network?

Thanks,

Michelle Bye
