Discussion about Recovery Time & Effort

by bprats . Updated 22 years, 9 months ago

As a service provider, I receive calls and attend to many virus infections and crash recoveries. Most are very bad where the company or individual has neglected their Windows systems.

My concern is how to shorten the time it takes to perform a recovery. Since the speed of the system is a big factor, I can only improve my approach or the tool set. The average time to clean a PC and recover sensitive data is about 10 hours depending on many factors. If the PC is used for financial systems, then the time can be much longer. It is not unusual to find 400 trojan horse programs and 3 to 10 popular virus in a single PC.

Another factor are the web sites visited. Adult entertainment sites appear to spawn popups that lead to some terrible trojan horses in hidden files.

My tool set includes the professional versions of software mentioned throughout these security discussions.

I would be interested in hearing from others who have ongoing experience removing virus and trojan horse programs. What are your experiences with the length of time and effort? When do you decide to replace the hard drive and start new? Of course payment for our services is an issue so how do you inform your client that the Klez virus infection will add substantial hours to the project.

Thanks in advance.
