Disk Boot Error after Installing RAM

By boycemarkham ·
I hope someone can help me. I just replaced RAM on my older Sony Vaio
PCV-RX800 series PC using 3 cards from Crucial (512MB 184-Pin Unbuff
DIMM 64Mx64 DDR PC2700 Pb-Free). We went thru all the proper steps,
I believe, but received an error message after installing and starting up
the computer (Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Enter).

I'm not sure what System Disk to insert and we tried to go back to the
original RAM, but getting the same message. Not sure what to try next.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Remove any optical discs from the drive ...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to Disk Boot Error after Ins ...

The error message you are getting usually comes from booting with a disc in the optical drive or floppy drive that is not bootable.

Remove whatever disc is in there, then boot with the drive(s) empty.

Your system should now boot as normal (from the hard drive).

Check all internal cables inside PC case ...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to Disk Boot Failure

When the case was opened and the memory installed, it is possible that the ribbon cable(s) between the hard drive(s) and the motherboard were dislodged. Perhaps the system cannot 'see' the boot hard drive any more.

Can you go into the BIOS and check if the hard drive is recognised in there? If the BIOS can't see it, the cables have been bumped/dislodged during the insertion of the memory.

According to my research of this Sony model ...

The type of RAM modules you should be fitting is:

512MB Sony VAIO Desktop 184-pin PC2100 DDR DIMM (p/n PCGEMMRX512)

Who advised you to install PC2700 memory?
What speed of memory did you take out?

As Critical state that their DDR PC2700 RAM suits this system

by OH Smeg In reply to Disk Boot Error after Ins ...

Try removing 1 Stick and see if it works now.

You should enter BIOS after making any Memory Changes and check to see if all of it is being Recognized and Save Changes when you Exit BIOS as the RAM Load is the change here.

As all the other RAM Makers recommend DDR PC2100 RAM for this unit I'm assuming here that Critical either no longer makes the PC2100 RAM or that they needed to provide better speed RAM because their is substandard and error out for this unit.
