Disk Chatter Windows 98 2nd Try

By mippps ·
New Question - same problem. I am supporting a pc with windows 98 that starts to read the "c" drive every 10 or 15 minutes. You can here the disk working overtime for a few minutes and then it quiets down. This all happens when the pc is not being used, just powered up. I have disabled Norton System Works stuff and Win98's Maintenance Wizard tasks. I have looked for the offending task in the task manager to no avail. Your ideas would be appreciated. Previous answers to a like question were given. We have checked out the ideas given but problem still exists. Checking background tasks from task manager probably was not done because of our inexperience with all the tasks running. What do we look for in task manager.
--------------------- checked suggestions below
if you have office installed, check that journaling is turned off in Outlook..
i would also turn off fast find indexer, if installed. control panel/fast find/highlight index(es), choose close and stop. then remove fast find from startup folder (if there).
of course you have checked for viruses...

Open resource meter, and verify that you do not have a memory leak.
Also, check for programs that run in the back-ground using up RAM, and reducing the amount of free RAM.
W98 works best with between 128MB, and 384MB of installed RAM.
If the system has less than 64MB, or more than 511MB, you have too little or too much RAM for Windows to run efficiently.

Disk Chatter Windows 98 2nd Try

Hello again.

If this answer does not help, or correct the problem, reject the answer along with comments, and I will see if I can come up with a few more ideas.

In task Manager, the only programs required to RUN Windows are:

Explorer
Systray

Everything else is extras.
You may have a virus scanner
or Network clients running

On a 'typical' running system, you should have less programs running than a full list in the Task Manager Window.

If you can add a comment listing what is running, we can help determine what is and isn't necessary.

Also, how much RAM is installed?

Under System Properties, on the performance tab, what are the drive and virtual memory settings?

Windows usually runs a little bit better if you set the PC type to Network Server.
(It improves file handling)

When was the last time that scandisk and defrag was run?
I recommend booting into safe mode, and shutting down all tasks except Explorer and systray, then run scandisk and defrag.
Make sure that scandisk is set to repair errors.

I would try a program called Adaware. It checks for spyware on the system. I've had computers do that same thing and it was always some spyware running that shouldn't be.

Check and see if you have a file in the startup folder called fast find or fastfind. If the computer has office on it one version installed this. It is designed to scrounge around all of your disk in search of word or excel file just so it can find this a millisecond faster.

Rip it out by the roots. Delete it and reboot.

We looked for fastfind in the startup folder and did not find. It could have been the problem and we appreciate all the help we have received.

The adaware idea is a good one. I have seen this before as well. Something else that you can check is your power management settings. If you don't use the sleep feature of your computer (if it supports it) disable all of the power management settings in the bios and in windows. This is just a shot in the dark but I would at least give it a shot.
