disk clean up

By cdobbin ·
I have an Aopen PII 350 running w2k pro. Single HDD, system partion is 4gig NTFS with about 1.2gigs free, 2nd partition is 2 gig FAT32.
Here's my problem, when ever I try and run disk cleanup it starts but never moves past "disk cleanup is calculating how much space you will be able to free" the HDD is going like crazy but the status bar never moves. Works fine when I do it on the drive, this problem only exists on the C: drive.
I have ran scandisk and found no problems, I have all the latest service packs and updates installed.
Anybody have any idea's??

Search and remove all *.tmp, ~*.*, and all Temporary Internet Files. Then try the disk cleanup on c.

If still not working, then boot to safe mode and run it alone. In order words, disable anything you have running in background... no screensavers, no network activity, no internet activity, no anti-virus activity.

The fact that the program works fine on the D Drive means that the program is fine. The fact that a scandisk on C Drive means that your drive itself is fine.

Leave disk cleanup running on the C Drive. Don't watch the status bar... do something else for awhile. As long as the hdd is working at it, it should be running. I wouldn't worry about the length of time it takes to cleanup c, because it sounds as if c drive may be pretty full. If it has not been cleaned recently, then let it work.

If the hdd stops churning away and the bar won't move, then there may be something going on with the hdd in spite of the fact that a scandisk is not showing any problems.

This may be caused by the partition being NTFS,update to latest service pack and disable anti-virus when running dsik cleanup on the C: drive

have you checked the tools such as Task Manager and Performance monitor. If you load up task manager and view the processes, there may be some that are working very hard (add such columns as mem usage, io reads, etc).
