disk error repair

By leewhiteley ·
An NTFS disk was mistakenly processed with CHKDSK /R due to some significant errors. Several folders were recovered name wise and some content wise. Can CHKDSK /F be run at this late date or should some other utility(Norton) be used to recover stupid files?

I am not sure what you are calling "stupid files" however:

A quick check of chkdsk /? yields all
available switches ie: /L /V /R /F ect.

chkdsk /R locates bad sectors and recovers
readable information (implies /F)

I suggest you have already done a /F as part
of /R per help instructions.

The CHKDSK /R does include CHKDSK /F, so it shouldn't hurt anything to try the /F parameter also.

My experience has been that Norton will find some of the files that were presumed to be lost. Hope so, for your sake.

You could also try to resore the master boot record possibly resoring the ntfs to a consistant state, or at least long enough for you to get files off the drive and then reinstall windows. If you are running Win NT then try the following:

FDISK /MBR

or if you are running W2K, then try this:

FIXMBR

BUT you could also read more on this topic here:

need to recover lost ntfs files?

really easy

go on the net and find recoverNT
it is a little program that will scan your hard drive and allow you to recover old files off an ntfs partition (also works for fat16/fat32)
