disk needs to be formatted

"A" drive is broken disks will not be read says they need to be formatted. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

I presume you mean that you are putting a floppy disc in the A drive and getting the error message.
If so first put in a KNOWN GOOD floppy and see if you can read it, if you cant, first check the floppy drive cable is connected ok, if ok then try substituting another drive this will prove at once whether the drive is faulty or not.

change the floppy with "the friendly" one

I have had this issue several times and found the causes to be
1. Disks that have been used in a different operating system as in trying to access disks that have been formatted using an NT machine on a win 98 machine. Reformat the disk
2. The floppy disk has been very close to a mobile phone. The resulting radio energy from the phone has destroyed the formating of the disk. Bin the disks and get new ones
3. The disk drive has got a worn or very dirty head. This has resulted in damaging disks and not reading them correctly, leading up to the format message. Clean or replece the drive
