Disk partition: From single c:\ to multiple c, d and e

Hi,

Need some help with Drive partitioning.
I bought a Dell Inspiron laptop with 40 GB Hard Disk, and while purchasing, the Dell rep did not tell me that it will come with only one single drive (C:\).
Now, I have a single drive on my laptop C:\, it shows a total space of 34 GB (God knows where this 6 GB went) and it is 30 GB full.

I want to create another partition on my Hard drive, so I took Partition Magic 8.0 from PowerQuest. There, in the screenshots, it showed to have a tool called “SPLIT PARTITION”. However, that split partition is disabled on my laptop installation. I understand that it may be because I have only one C:\ which is 90% full.

Can anyone please tell me:
1) How should I split my single C:\ into atleast 3 partitions – c:\, D:\ and e:\ without loosing the data.
DO I need to take backup of my data on DVD?
2) Can this be done using Partition Magic?
3) Any other free tool available on the net which can help me do it?

THanks,
Shobhit
