Disk prevents PC to start

By garcias ·
Hi, see if you can help. After a electrical problem that fried the motherboard, the disk Maxtor 10 gb) wouldnt start in any PC, and the PCS wouldnt start if that disk was pluged. Sent it to a recovery company and couldn't do anything, what do you suggest I can try besides putting it in the freezer and slapping it.
Thanks for your comments

Disk prevents PC to start

The ONLY real option for your situation, is to get an IDENTICAL working drive, and swap the circuit card on the bottom of the drive.

You may need to have someone with EXCELLENT electronics soldering skills swap the boards.
If you are lucky, the controller uses plug-in connections, and all you need is a good ground strap.

When the motherboard fried, what it most likely took out on the drive is the drive controller.

As long as the heads and motors were not damaged, changing the controller should bring the drive back to life.

My only concern, is that I would expect the data recovery firm to have already tried this.
If they did, then the motors or heads are fried.

I would go ahead and swap the drive controller, and see if the drive will function.
At least that way, you will know that the drive has a major problem.

You may need to try a more expensive recovery service that would be able to move the platters into a working drive.
