Disk read error

By hst125 ·
Hi
I have a machine with a P4c800-e deluxe motherboard & hitachi sata 120gig H/D. I used Casper 4 to copy this drive to a hitachi sata 350 gig. After doing this I check them & thay both were the same file wise. I then tried the machine with just the larger drive. On boot up: Disk read error. Decided to load win xp fresh install & got the same error massage, Have tried all sorts to no avail.

Thank you
John

Well it would help no end if you told us what you have tried

At the very least is prevents us posting the same suggestions again. We also need to know what OS is in use here as that makes a difference.

The most obvious answer however is that you have switched from a IDE to SATA Drive and when you cloned the drive you failed to take into account that you needed to Install a SATA Driver.

Also when you installed the OS whatever it that may have been did you load a SATA Driver for your OS?

If you are using a form of Windows this doesn't natively support SATA Drives and you need to press the F6 Kay when the first Blue Screen appears and then insert a floppy with the SATA Driver copied for your M'Board and OS to the Root of the Floppy.

Of course if you are trying to install some form of Linux, BSD I have absolutely no idea of what is going wrong here as they should support SATA Drives Natively unless it is a very old version or either Linux or BSD.

did you download and run the diagnostic tools from the hard drive manufacturer so you can test to see if the hard drive is bad or failing?

The disk might be OK but 0x00 is the boot sector.

Your computer can not read this. So you will have to get some software (such as this):
http://www.spotmau.com/
to mount the drive in question so that your computer can see it.

Please post back if you have anymore problems or questions.

Disk read error

by hst125 In reply to The disk might be OK but ...

HI

Another machine became available (older) I ran Casper xp 4 & it worked perfectly so I take it that my motherboard (ASUS p4c800-e) is where the problem lies but I can not fathom out what.

Thank you for replying.

Most probably the chip set on your motherboard.

Since it is an older motherboard there will not be any bios updates for it. But at least you have a working computer.

Please post back if you have anymore problems or questions.
