Disk size vs performance

by ggl . Updated 24 years, 5 months ago

Is disk drive size directly proportional to response times?
I have a Dell PowerEdge 6300 with a PowerVault 200S external disk array. The array has 6 – 9GB drives, RAID5. Response times writing to/from the server is considerably slower as comparedto smaller internal RAID5 arrays on other servers.

In the same light, I have 2 similar servers running SQL 7.0. These servers are virtually identical except for disk size. One has 6 – 9 GB internal RAID5 array . The other has 4 – 36GB internalRAID5 array. A SQL backup of a 2GB database takes approximately 7 times longer with the larger drives.
Are these 2 scenarios related? Is this a normal expectation? Please comment.
Thanks.
