disk write error

when ever i try to copy a file larger than 5mb from cdrom to hdd i get a disk write error.i have checked the hdd but it is working properly may be my bios settings are changed.problem exists even if i load default bios pc (hp pavilion 8865) configuration are
128mb sd ram
me os
20.4gb hdd
intel 810e motherboard

MANY MANY reasons! This is actually quite a generic message, making it harder to pin point, others here may have similar experiences as you though.

I will assume:
1) You have drive space
2) Your system is defragmented

You don't have a lot of RAM installed, adding more will be helpful (you'll love the performance gains too).

Do you know WHO'S hard drive is installed?

You have checked that the file your are trying to copy is not write protected?

Are you running Norton AntiVirus? The extended memory service may have been shut down by the NOEMS string being added.

If you post back with details, it should help myself and possibly others to offer more.
