Disk Write Error

By loopyh ·
A recent problem that has only just started happening on my machine. A Disk Write Error occurs whenever I execute a programme, stating "unable to write to disk in drive c: Data or files may be lost. Press any key to continue". Can anybody explain why this is suddenly occuring and what I can do to resolve it??

I will go under the assumption that the program you are referring to has been installed and working for a while.
You are either out of disk space or a sector is failing. If you know that you have plenty of disk space, run the scan disk program. Use the surface scan feature to verify the operating systems ability to read and write to all sectors on the drive. If scan disk locates a bad sector it will mark it as bad and the program will no longer be able to write to that location.
If this turns out to be the case, I would consider replacing the drive. The discovery of bad sectors is an early warning, at least to me, that the drive may be going bad.

I've gotten this error from the file being opened elsewhere. Delete all the *.TMP files from everywhere. Start --> Find --> file/folders --> *.TMP. Control-A to select them all, and delete them. This could remove the potential file that is conflicting... and it will make space. If your computer is online (via Internet), you should probably delete all the temportary internet files as well.

I'm willing to bet your Hard Drive is about to bite the dust - if not already there.

Do a thourough DEFRAG (afer scandisk) and keep an eye for bad sectors. Once they start developing in your drive its pretty much downhill from there. I would not, from this point, rely on that drive.

Good luck.
