Not sure what version of windows computer was using. I just got the computer given to my daughter and it wont run now. We dont have an operating system disk. Is there a way to fix it w/o having to reinstall windows?

the short answer is not realy. You will need to boot the machine somehow. Either an OS disk or a boot disk(if it is an older OS)

If you have access to a good machine and a cd burner, there are a number of bootable repair utilities out there, but they are usually not for the feint of heart. (Read they are generally designed for functionality, not a pretty GUI)

Well for starters you could have a look on the case for a MS sticker which may tell you what version of Windows in installed on the unit. The Certificate Of Authenticity has been around since Win 98SE so if there is no sticker called a COA on the case on the under side of a Note Book you either have a Pirate Copy of Windows or something prior to 98SE.

What error messages are you getting when you try to start the thing up? It could be something as simple as a flat CMOS Battery or it could be far more serious but without knowing more it's very hard to say what you can do if anything at all.

Also, if it is a major computer brand (Dell,
Compaq, HP, etc.), you can go online or call the manufacturer of the machine and pay a small amount of money to have the Recovery disks sent to your doorstep. All you need to know is the make and model(and perhaps a service code, serial number or other number).

The error message may also mean that your hard disk is Kaput.
