Display Adapter Driver Changed in XP

After upgrading to XP from 98SE, a Windows Update recommended upgrading the NVidia 256 GE Force display adapter driver. After doing so, one of my graphic intensive programs will not open and gives me a message “Could not start OpenGL subsystem”. If I attempt to reinstall the old driver (provided by my PC manufacturer), I get a warning that installing that driver could damage my system. Please help.
