Display appearance changes on its own

By richard ·
This problem has occured on 2 different computers, one running WIN95 and one WIN98SE. The display appearance has been set to a normal size (ej. Windows Classic) and on its own it changes to another setting (usually High Contrast White Large). Sometime it changes while the computer is on but it usually happens when the computer is turned on.

Most liekly cause is a driver conflict for either the video system, or the monitor itself.

Start by updating the motherboard / chipset drivers.
Then, update the driver for the video card.

Finally, make sure that the monitor is identified correctly in display settings.
For some monitors, you will need a driver file from the mfg.

If updating drivers doesn't change the problem, you might try extracting and installing a new copy of desk.cpl to your system. It belongs in the C:\windows\system folder, assuming c:\windows is your OS directory. For instructions on extracting files, go to:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q129605

Remove any spaces that appear the URL above.

Good luck.

Make sure you click the 'Apply' button after making your changes. Simply clicking 'OK' only changes the settings for the current session.
