Display no longer working

By Bergermatic ·
I was in the middle of rocking out to Guitar Hero III on my PC, and my machine crashed. Unfortunately, this hasn't been an uncommon thing lately.

Now, when I restart my machine, I clear the XP blue bar scroller fine, but past that all I get is an empty black display.

I can hear my applications starting in the background(ie. the Skype sound)

I can remote in using LogMeIn, but all I see is the black display.

I logged into Safe Mode, downloaded and installed the latest video drivers. This did not resolve my issues.

I'm at a loss for where to go next.... any thougths/suggestions?

Windows XP Pro SP2,
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual 3.0GHz
nVidia 8800 GTS 680MB
Dual Display: 1 DVI, one DVI converted to VGA

..."hasn't been an uncommon thing lately" Eh?

So, how common has this crashing been?
How many times has this happened before?

Did you take any problem-solving action prior to this currently fatal event?

Are both outputs from the Dual Display affected?

Does your system just barely meet the game's requirements?

That may account for crashing.

As to the black screen: The video mode is probably set incorrectly. Start in safe mode and set the display resolution and colour depth to something your machine can handle.

The most likely thing to have happened is that the Game

Has taken control of the Video Out and it's now set to something that the Monitor can not display. Either the Screen Resolution is Too High of the Refresh Rate is too high.

Cure is to Boot in Safe Mode and delete the game and then may delete the Games Video

Or press the F8 Key and chose to boot with Last Known Good Configuration.

Either may cure the problem or may not and if they don't a new clean install of the OS is called for.
