Display Problems

I have a Dell Dimension desktop PC that is having display problems. When running Windows, the start menu button, desktop icons and system tray icons look "snowy" (like on a tv) and there are lines across other screen elements.

I have tried multiple steps to solve the problem, but have not succeeded. I swapped out the graphics card, I have replace the RAM and I have replaced the hard drive. None of these have fixed the problem.

I have also tried adjusting the BIOS settings. My BIOS has 2 options: on board and auto. When I plug the monitor into the PCI graphics card, there is no display (no matter which BIOS setting I choose). If I plug the monitor into the on-board graphics card and select AUTO in the BIOS, there is no display. The only way it works is if the PCI graphics card is removed or if the PCI graphics card is removed, BIOS changed to on-board and the card plugged back in (monitor plugged into on-board card) When this is done, Windows will detect the new card but will not load a display from it.

Any suggestions?

try new cable or different input port

What kinda of display is it? size? max resolution? which graphic card are you using and what resolution are you trying to output?

Since you replaced the graphic card which also means you reloaded some new video drivers, that should only leave the display itself and the video cable that could be going bad. Try using a different cable and/or an alternate input port.

How to disable your integrated video chip as posted by the Moderator

2200, 2300, 2350, 2400, 3000, 3100, E310, B110/1100

* Right click the My Computer icon
* Click Properties
* Click the Hardware tab and/or the Device Manager button
* Open the Display Adaptors. You should see the Intel video card
* Double click the listing for Intel whatever
* At the bottom under "Device Usage", click the down arrow and change this to "Do not use this device, disable"
* Click OK- Apply- OK
* Close all boxes when done
* Click Start- Turn Off Computer- Restart
* Press F2 at the blue Dell logo screen
* Down arrow to either:
Onboard Devices- Primary Video
Primary Video
Integrated Devices- Primary Video Controller
* Change yours to AUTO or PCI (whatever is listed)
* Press ESC several times to Exit and Save your changes
* As the system starts to restart, power the system off
* Open the case cover and add the PCI video card
* Connect the monitor to the added PCI video card
* Power on your computer
* Let the computer boot up and load the drivers off of the CD provided with the card

You get the exact same effect from either the on-board video adapter or the PCI video card?

After much troubleshooting I discovered that the issue was with the motherboard.
