Display settings-laptop w / ext. monitor

By CharlieSpencer ·
I'm deploying several new Dell D620 laptops. These are the first laptops I've used with what I'll ignorantly call a "wide screen" display.

When the system is in the docking station with an external monitor connected, I'd like the display set to either 800x600 or 1024x768, depending on the user's preference. I don't have any problem setting that, but when I click Start, Undock, and undock the laptop, the onboard LCD remains at a 4 ratio. This doesn't use the entire LCD, leaving an almost one inch (or just over two cms for you metric folks) unused vertical bar on each side of the display.

I'd like the laptop to automatically adjust to use the full screen when not docked. Is there a way to make this happen or is the user going to have to adjust it manually every time?

Something to check, right click my computer, go to the hardware tab. Then Click on "Hardware Profiles". There should be two in there, Docked and Undocked. If there isnt, that could be one problem, another is if you(or the PC is) choosing the wrong profile when you switch.

Is this happening during a HOT siwtch or cold, as in are you booting while docked, or you just plug in while the PC is running?

Hope this helps!

cct, this happens when I undock the laptop while it is running. The system is changing to the correct profile as I dock and undock.

if you look under Help in XP under Mobile users, you will find all kinds of tidbits for supporting those troublesome users. maybe a Hardware profile will work. did you try. all is explained in the xp Help section but here is the mskb article link

Sarge, I know how to enable / disable devices in each profile, but I'm showing FIVE "Plug and Play Monitors", all with the same driver. I don't know which one is the LCD, which one is the external, and which ones (if any) are bogus. Even if the LCD and the external were the only two displays listed, I can't figure out how to set a different resolution for each.

I was working with the Fn-F8 LCD / CRT toggle when I noticed the goofy icon on the F7. The Fn-F7 function key combo toggles the display between:

1) Resolution displayed at normal size; may result in a small window on a display intended for higher resolutions;

2) Resolution maximized to fill as much screen as possible but centered and maintaining aspect ratio, resulting in black bars on either side;

3) Resolution maximized to fill as much screen as possible and stretched without regard for aspect ratio, filling the entire screen.
