Dissapearing CD-ROM

My CD-ROM and Zip 100 have disappeared. It started with my internal fax reading illegal act and closing, can not use. Then CD-ROM and Zip disappeared. My virus detection says no virus. I can get into my Registry but don’t know what to look for from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. HP Pavilion 6470z Windows 98
