Distinguishable copies of invoice

By Lowe ·
Want to print three copies of the same invoice and distinguish each by a watermark, different background shading, or a different border. Is there a way to use a particular watermark(e.g. "FILE COPY") via PCL and/or PJL, for example? A shaded background would be acceptable. This would be done on a dedicated laserjet printer that only prints invoices. Don't know if I have to print the same invoice three times or can programmatically make changes via a macro to have each copy printe with the changes desired.

What program do you use to print the invoices? It should at least put 1,2,3 on them. There are water marks and shadeing that you can use but will they work with the program you have? You need to contact the company you bought the software from to see what you can do with it.

Good point, but this is a custom, non-windows (DOS)application (XP stations, Win2K server) that currently prints on a three-part pre-printed form. I can print the same invoice multiple times, hopefully with a slightly different printer configuration each time via PCL/PJL commands.

Was looking for something similar a while back ... and had no luck. The printing company that does my letterhead only charged a bit more to watermark the pages for me, and they are bundled sequential. Not the answer you're looking for, but maybe aquick fix until you figure this out.

Thanks. I agree it could work as a temporary solution. The first time the printer jams or someone presses the "new page" button, everyone will be on my case, etc....
Does anyone know how to create an overlay that can be changed on a copy 1, copy2, copy 3 basis? Maybe by printing each copy with a different macro? I am a programmer but have never created a printer macro/overlay.
I think this is an important issue because it can eliminate dot-matrix printers and expensive forms. This is not the only application I can use this for. I'm willing to pay for source code and/or procedure(s) for a clean, moderate volume solution (1000+ pages daily) if anyone has a reference(s).
I will change points to 1000.

You could use a dot matrix printer and three part forms.

I am trying to eliminate the three part form because it is inflexible, expensive, and requires using a slow dot-matrix printer. With a software solution, I can make "instant" changes.

Custom modifications to your application are the only way.

It does appear you are 100% correct. I have been searching for solutions and found several quite old references but nothing looks real promising. It may be possible after studying several PCL/PJL manuals and spending a lot of time developing Overlays/Macros. Obviously, this is an old issue that has been dismissed as not easily solved. Maybe I will send a message to HP technical support. The general feature that would be helpful to many is the ability to set and reset a HP/HP compatible laser printer to print a sequence of "watermarks", one for each copy of a particular document printed. For example: No watermark on first copy, a large 'I' for temporary internal use on the second copy, a large 'F' for File copy on the third copy, etc. This is obviously a doable thing by HP. If this is not a programmable feature, it should be! In any case, Overlays have been around a long time. Surely HP has some samples and guidance other than starting from scratch with technical manuals! It would increase HP's sales in the 'replace dot-matrix' segment. Who/what is the best contact at HP?

We use MAS200 for accounting, and use Crystal Reports to design/print invoices, sales orders, quotes, purchase orders, etc.
The Multi-Part printing has eliminated 3and4-part forms for us, as we use "shadow text" to differentiate copies which go to whse, acctg, customer, etc.
