Distributed systems

Consider the possibilities that distributed PC networks a la Gnutella and the like present us and the dangers.

On the plus side, such combined computing power can fuel a number of projects which previously required supercomputers – everything from searching for intelligent life in space to calculating pi. What else?

On the negative side, a bunch of hackers can combine forces and basically overcome any encryption scheme out there. All havoc would break loose and no one government would be able to stop it. What else?

What do you think?
