dll errors and computer running slow

I keep getting errors in kernel32.dll, ddrawex.dll, and shell32.dll when i try running various programs. Also, the speed of my computer has dropped off drastically. I cannot even play mp3s while on the internet. I have a 900mhz processor and 512mb of ram though. Any idea what causes these things to occur?
