DNS Alias Not Working

By nixarie ·
Hi all,

I have a machine at work I want to alias so I can access it by a different name. For the purpose of this post, I am aliasing machine123.company.com to tester.company.com

- pinging machine123 works fine
- pinging tester works fine and also displays the fqdn of the machine (machine123.company.com)
- nslookup tester shows tester.machine.com being the alias of machine123.company.com
- net view machine 123 works fine
- net view tester (or tester.company.com) shows
"System error 52 has occurred.
A duplicate name exists on the network"
- \\machine123 works fine
- \\tester pops up an error box with "A duplicate name exists on the network"
- there is no other machine on the network named tester. I have tried other aliases with the same results.

I have done aliasing in the past at other companies and never had this problem. The DNS server is running Win2k Server SP3. My client machine is running Win2K Pro SP4.

Any ideas what might be the problem? I've researched Technet and other web resources, but couldn't find any explicit help.

Thank you

Marius

this might be a long shot, but have you tried refreshing both DNS and the WINS cache on the local machine?

in a Command Prompt, use IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS and NBTSTAT -RR

(make sure the RR is in caps)

I have tried refreshing both DNS and WINS caches with no results. I'm getting the same message from any workstation I'm attempting this.
