DNS and Active Directory

By mktz ·
Can someone expain to me how i can set up a domain controller to also be the DNS Server. I am setting up a small lab to study active directory and when i run DCPROMO,give a DNS name and a netbios name etc. at the end a message appears "Active Directory" installation has failed. I thought if i set up the server with an ip address 127.0.0.1 it would work but doesnt. What confuses me about this is i have set up other servers like this with no problems and went into DNS which configured my ip address to be 127.0.0.1. HELP!!!!!!

I've tried this before and I got the same error. The problem is that you need an ctive NIC with an active connection. If you do not have another PC to connect to, you can add the MS Loopback Adapter from the Add New Hardware wizard. It simulates a virtual NIC, using your own PC as the host AND client. Also, the address you're using is the loopback address, so don't use that with the loopback adapter.

Hope this will halp. And happy learning.

Generally the DNS Server has the same IP address like that for the NIC. Remember to fix the subnetmask and replicate it on the lan. Remember that Active Directory must be installed on demand and is not automatically installed by setup of W2K.

Maybe you have to change the Zone Type from Active Directory to primary in the general tab of the properties of the DNS console.
