DNS and Active Directory Problems

by able-admin . Updated 24 years, 1 month ago

When trying to add a BDC to my domain I kept receiving an error stating that the PDC either did not exist or could not be contacted. After some research I realized my DNS server on the PDC was not set up correctly. Its missing the

_msdcs
_sites
_tcp
_udp

folders under the Forward Lookup Zones node with my domain name.

When I installed Active Directory on the PDC I let DCPROMO set up my DNS for me since one didn’t exist yet. Anyway, somehow the domain is bearly functioning correctly because I didn’t realize this untill I tried to add a BDC 6 months later.

Is there anyway that I can repair the DNS records to the correct state without reinstalling AD.

This is the only Server on my comapanies network so I dont want torisk losing any accounts or the like.

I’d be glad to answer an other questions someone may have if I’ve left some relevent information out.

Thanx
