I have a windows 2000 network with active directory. The ip address for my server is 192.168.1.1, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. My PCs have static ip addresses. I share an internet connection using a 3COM 56K dial-up lan modem(same ip range and subnet as server) attached to the nic of one of my workstations. The workstation has a static ip address, the default gateway is the address of the lan modem, the primary dns is the lan modems address. I did not put a secondary dns on this workstation. I have a crossover cable connecting the lan modem to a switch for my internal network. Most of my workstations get internet access when the browser is started. The workstations have the same setup as the workstation with the modem attached except they have the sever’s address as the secondary dns. I can get network resources. The problem is I have a workstation setup with “administrative tools”. Now I cannot access active directory. What’s wrong. Do I need to put a secondary dns on the workstation with the lan modem attached? Also, at times when I click on the ie5.5 browser I receive “cannot display page” message. I can ping the modem, but I still get this message. I cannot find anything different on the workstations that do not receive this message. Thank you for your help.
