DNS and WINS together on W2K Server

By KingOfTheNerds ·
Hi All,

I have around 100 pcs and around 20 are Windows 98 and the others are windows 2000. I have a W2K server running DNS and DHCP. However when i entered this network they had an old NT 4.0 Server running WINS.
This server broke down and i took it out of the equation because it was causing more problems then it was solving.
However, I am now operating without a WINS server with clients using only NETBIOS to resolve names.
My question is, Why didn't they have the WINS server setup on the Windows 2000 Server?
I have not setup a WINS server before so I was wondering, will it cause problems having WINS and DNS on the same server and why?
Will it slows things down and why?
Is it better to keep it on a seperate server and if so why?

Thankyou

WINS is an old method of resolving NEtbios names to IP addresses. Its still needed for for older clients (NT, 9x). Yes, you can have the WINS server on the DNS server. It shouldn`t slow things down as network traffic will be very light.
I am planning on moving our WINS servers to 2000 servers soon myself.

Actually, it's good to have a WINS server. That will cut down on the broadcasts used to locate other PCs, etc. Therefore, it will help not hurt.
WINS and DNS can and do live side by side.
As far as the need of a sperate server - not needed they can be on the same.

It is not going to hurt your network. I have WINS and DNS on the same Windows 2000 server and it is working without any glitches. My net work has 170 computers (Windows 2000 and XP).

Nope, as far as I'm concerned I answered your questions. I encourage no one to help you. Obviously you have no clue what you're doing. Furthermore, you are abusing the helping nature of everyone who answered your question, and TechRepublic as a whole... shame on you.
