DNS disables Exchange name res

By angsax ·
Win 95 machines -- enable DNS and add firewall addresses -- after reboot, can ping Exchange server by IP but not by name.

Some machines are identical and some are not. Some on same subnet, some not. No pattern found.

Just a short in the dark, but have your tried to ping using the fullname?

Like...

ping postoffice.somedomain.com

isftead of doing a

ping postoffice

If that works, You should be able to either add your domain into the suffix search order or enter a hosts entry with the IP and Name for a wins lookup.

Good luck to you

This was something that would help us with other changes we plan to implement, but not with this issue. Good info though. Thanks.

The fix was simple and entailed just adding the exchange server IP to the WINS server.

If you are going across a firewall you will need to enable the WINS service on the exchange server and define and enable the servers IP in the clients TCP/IP setup

Good info, but we're not accessing our exchange across the firewall. We may do that in the future and this is helpful info. Thanks for the input.
