DNS error

By dakheelaa ·
We installed windows 2000 in the latest server we bought, and it is running OK, but we are receiving the following error in the event viewer:
The DNS server was unable to add or write an update of domain name _gc in zone samad.com to the Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly and add or update this domain name using the DNS console. The event data contains the error.
When we check in the TechNet we found an article (Q252695) saying that we have to move theglobal catalog or the DNS server to a different domain controller or Do not integrate the DNS server that is hosting the global catalog with Active Directory.
But ,unfortunately we have only one server which is compatible with windows 2000, the rest of our controllers are NT, and we are running in a mixed mode.
We need help.

From everything that I've read, you can't run Active Directory in a mixed domain. That is where your problem lies. Get rid of the AD and your problem should be solved.

Thank u Mike for your answer, but getting rid of the AD is getting rid of Windows 2000,which is not the solution I'm looking for. The AD is working OK now and I'm able to manage our domain from AD, but very rarely we face problems with user's authntication and shared files connection, besides, I'm planing to install exchange 5.5 ,so I weant to get rid of this error before that.

Are you running DNS only on the W2K server?

I had a problem adding W2K backup domain controllers to my AD Domain until I changed the AD mode to native, and not mixed.

Can you setup your W2K system as the PDC, and have your other NT boxes be Member Servers?

Have you tried to setup DNS on the AD server? This should fool it into thinkint that it is the main DNS server>

Anyway, hope this helps.

Mike
