DNS errors in event viewer

By rr0s3 ·
I'm getting a repetitive error entry logged into the System Log in Event Viewer at system start-up. The entry is as follows:

Source: NETLOGON
Category: None
EventI 5774
Description: Registration of the DNS record 'domain.net 600 IN A 192.168.0.1' failed with the following error: DNS server unable to interpret the format.

This same error is logged multiple times (usually 16x each reboot) with a slightly different variation on the DNS record that is says it can't interpret. For example, the first one states the above, then another will say that the entry '_ldap_tcp.domain.net 600 IN SRV 0 100 389 server.domain.net' failed, yet another with '_ldap_tcp.Default-First-Site-Name_sites.domain.net 600 IN SRV 0 100 389 servername.domainname.net' failed, etc for 16 different entries.

All errors have NETLOGON as the source and 5774 as the EventID. Microsoft TechNet has no entries for this event id and no Netlogon errors that match it.....

Can anyone tell me the cause of these errors and, more importantly, how to correct them...???

You don't specify if this is a domain controller or DNS server, but in the past I have seen this issue in the following scenerio:
An AD domain controller running DNS with itself specified as the primary DNS server in the TCP/IP settings. On boot the netlogon service starts before the DNS service. However the netlogon service requires a response from DNS acknowlodging a successful dynamic update to the DNS record. Since DNS has not started yet, it never receives that acknowlodgement and recordsthe events you are seeing.

To resolve the issue I set the dependancy of the netlogon service to the DNS service so that DNS started first. The problem went away.

I hope that helps......

That was it. Needed to set NETLOGON to depend on DNS and it solved the problem. Thanks!

Check several things.

is 'Allow Dynamic Updates' set to yes?

in your tcp/ip properties, under DNS server, are putting that same IP of the server?

The problem can also be caused when the NETLOGON service start before DNS does, and it recordsthe error in the event viewer. You can set the NETLOGON service to wait until DNS service has started. If you go to Start, Run, type in regedt32, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CURRENT CONTROL SET, SERVICES, NETLOGON. Double click on DEPENDONSERVICE on the right side. Add DNS to the list. Reboot.

MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE DOING ANYTHING WITH IT.

Your answer was right and, second... I awarded points on a first-come basis. The problem was the NETLOGON startup issue.
