DNS IN 2000 ACTIVE DIRECTORY

Myself and my company have found W2k DNS to be reliable. Some questions as far as your setup is concerned. For your machines pointing to the win2k dns, do you have any DNS suffix search orders defined? I.E. company.com listed in the TCP/IP properties. Also are you choosing to "Register this connection's address in DNS" in the TCP/IP properties, to ensure that "A" records are automatically being created? Sounds like one of the two are not being done. HTH.

I suspect that you either do not have a reverse lookup zone set up, or the appropriate PTR records haven't been created.

The forward lookup zone rsolves an IP address to a specific host name.

The reverse lookup zone resolves a host name to a specific IP address.

Hope this helps.

And to answer your question:

I have found Windows DNS (particularly as implemented in Win2K to be very reliable (when properly configured).

Manually add the reverse ptr and it will be fine. Then run Nslookup to verify proper resolution.
