DNS/internet/intranet

How can I get internet explorer to access hosts in the same manner that the UNC does? If my DNS server has an “A” record of “temp1test” mapped to 172.16.1.149,and the corresponding PTR, why can I type \\temp1test\reports in IE and get the folder on temp1test but when I just type “temp1test” in IE it automatically takes me to the internet and does not even look at the intranet first. I have the resolver configured to query the local DNS server along with the suffix search order pointing to the zone that the server is authoritative for. nslookup on the other hand works fine on the intranet. It IDs the server and the address, forwards and backwards, but it will not go outside the intranet to the internet.Should it? I have WINS lookup enabled and WINS reverse lookup enabled on this seemingly simple one zone, one DNS server configuration. Can I get this to do what I want it to do, that is, have IE go to the intranet first to resolve mapped hosts and if it cannot find the host, go to the internet for the closest match it can find. Do I need to have more than one server to do this, a name server that is authoritative for the internet?
