DNS issues

By mteff ·
I'm having a small issue with Win 2K DNS.

It seems after a week or so of running fine, it will stop resolving addresses, that it doesn't have in the cache. I stop and restart the DNS server service and it starts working fine. There are no errors in the event log from DNS.

Any ideas or suggestions would be great.
Thanks

check the configuration of the dns see if the root hints are there.and on the monitoring tab at the server properties try
simple and recursive query.
run nslookup from cmd ,see if it resolving
names .if you have firewall see if its not blockingit.

Root hints are there. Nslookup works. Firewall is open. Now there is one odd thing, simple and recursive queries, when running the DNS Admin from my Win 2k Pro workstation, Passes. If I try the queries on the Server itself. They fail.

The other thing is this problem is intermitant, right now its fine.

Sounds almost like DNS "island" scenario. Check out the following Q article Q275278 at www.microsoft.com/technet and see if this applies to your environment.

I read that one too, and its not really the issue.

Here's the config, DC1 installed with DNS as Primary with an AD-integrated domain, DC2 no DNS, member server with secondary DNS on a Win NT 4 server. Possible that the two DNS servers are having issues talking to each other, but no errors to indicate a problem.

Replication between the two DCs has not been affected, I've used ReplMon to check and they are replicating fine. It only appears to be an issue when resolving internet domain names.

Thanks for the info, any other suggestions.

One additional thing in reference to KB Q275278, under the _msdcs there are 2 CNAME entries with Guid to DC1 and DC2.

I had the simple and recursive test failing problem in my testlab environment. It turned out to be due to no service packs installed. Also, on secondary DNS servers, after a period of time in which no DNS transfer occurs, the DNS server renders its zone as out of date and does not answer queries against it.

Well, I have SP2 installed for Win 2K, and since this issue is on the Primary server in regards to resolving domain names from the internet, I'm not sure what that has. My understanding is when a cached domain times out, its deleted from the cache, and then when someone needs that domain again, its suppose to go back out to the roots servers and get the information. That's what its not doing.
