    DNS Question

    by bill.beckett ·

I have an existing NT domain with a registered DNS name. I plan on upgrading to 2000 by using a separate domain. This way it will not impact our production environment. My problem is this:

NT domain owns company.com and uses this for DNS. Installing a new 2000 DC into a separate domain but I would like to use the same company.com dns name. Can I? What problems will this cause? OR do I need to bite the bullet and get another domain name for the new domain?

Choice 1: Change the extension to something other than one of the TLD extensions – i.e. use company.priv, company.internal, company.local, etc. As long as you don’t use one of the recognized TLDs or regional TLDs, it doesn’t matter because it won’t be accessible to the outside world.

Choice 2: Create a child domain for your registered domain name – i.e. internal.company.com, corp.company.com, Atlanta.company.com, etc. Since the root domain company.com is registered to you, you can createas many child domains as you wish.
