DNS server

By johnricarte ·
recently, i was given the task of setting up a DNS server... i will be using an 800 mhz pentium III machine, 128 mb of RAM. the network is using NT 4 sp6. the question is, i have never set up a DNS server and quite frankly i dont know where to start, can i ask the so called experts to point me in the right direction and i promise i won't be stingy with the tech points... if there are any other things that i have skipped please feel free to comment on it and i will try to fill in the gaps as much as i could... thank you...

A good place to start is to go here:

http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/deployment/planguide/dnswp.asp

Download the document and read it thoroughly. Installing DNS on NT is easy, but getting it to work properly in your network environment requires some planning on your part.

Hey! Where did that 'space' come from? Please note that it's ... /planguide/dnswp.asp

As answer 1 mentioned, installing is easy, making sure its configured correctly can take a little work, and its best to have a good understanding of what, and how DNS works. An excellent reference book is: DNS on Windows NT ISBN#1565925114.

Understanding how DNS works prior to the install will definetly help.
If your network is considering a move to Windows 2000, I would look into installing a W2K server running Dynamic DNS.
It will be easier to set up and you'll be one step ahead for the migration.

Here are a few useful links:

Configuring a Domain (ie. yourdomain.com)

http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=13496

How to add records (ie. www.yourdomain.com where www is the record you want to add)

Hope these help,
